days of winter:: 21

As I walk down the hallway I notice that the door is shut tight.  That's unusual.  Usually the door is left wide open, for wandering in and out.  For getting more books to read, more toys to play with.  Not today, not this moment.  Right now, the door is deliberately closed.

So, I open it.

Looks who's behind the closed door of Baby Blue's room.  Someone didn't want her kitty to wander out.

dolce

"You found me! I've been good, can I go now?"

dolce

"I just sat here and waited patiently for someone to let me out... really."

dolce

"Oh, wait, there's one more toy I need to pounce on first."

dolce
"Ok, really, I'm done playing now.  I think I'll go."

(Recipe is Barbecue Meatloaf Muffins by Rachel Ray, I made it with turkey)
I know, these look strange, and frankly, they are.  Before I go out of town, I usually try to make a good home-cooked meal... you know, try to make that 'home' feeling last a bit longer.

This time I decided to try these and it was very, very good.  Think texas barbecue meets oklahoma rancher meets five year old girl (yeah, the muffin part kind of throws it off a bit), and that was the meal we had.  A bit spicy, so my brother enjoyed every last one that was left over.

A good farewell dinner that will hold me over... till next week.days of winter:: 20

Bundling up to head out, a night with family and friends for another's birthday celebration, dinner to satisfy my love affair with mexican food, dessert, snow outside.  Ohhh, winter bliss.

New hat.

IMG_5991

I love this kid's style.  She's definitely got one, all of her own.

It used to be that I'd pick out an outfit and have it nicely laid out, so that when I was in a panic stricken moment of "Wait, how many wipes are in the diaper bag?!  Let me look at the cute little colored checklist that I have printed and in a matching pink travel tag, attached to the diaper bag, and see if we've got everything.  Oh, ok, we're all set," Chris can get the baby dressed.  (Yes, first-time mom.)

This worked well for us.

Now, the kid's style is beginning to emerge and while I'm getting her outfit ready I hear, "No, mommy, this not match this.  Here, this match this.  I not wanna wear those boots, I want to wear my pink boots.  Not jeans, can I wear my new tights?"

I remind you, she's two.

So, with my slight guidence, she now gets her own outfits ready.  I have to say that whether or not I'd choose the outfit, they do match.

Who am I to judge if while at home watching Shrek for the 109,325,000th time she decides to wear her new hat.

I like wearing new things too.

"Think what a better world it would be if we all, the whole world, had cookies and milk about three o'clock every afternoon and then lay down on our blankets for a nap."

I would love to live in a world like that.

Hello my little friends.

mexican food
My hands touched the stiff white styrofoam, moving from back to front until my fingertips reached the latch.  As soon as the cover was open I was immediately taken to a different place. A different time.

It was a time of swollen ankles and expanding waistline.  A time of cracker nibbling and incredulous forgetfulness.  A time of irritation and tenderhearted affection.  A time of cleaning out and stocking up.

It wasn't last month's crimson tide.  (I'm sorry to all you men reading this post.)  It was about two and a half years ago and it wasn't just me anymore.  I was now responsible for more than one life.  I had another life forming inside me.

And than little life ate many, many nights on what was in this white styrofoam box.  I had even become 'a regular'.  This little mexican food dive would know my order as soon as I'd call.  One of the cooks was even in the delivery room of the hospital when Baby Blue decided to make her entrance.

Ok, maybe that one went a little too far.  But you know me, I can be prone to exaggeration.

Nostalgia.

That is really what I'm talking about.  I held onto that box, ready to slap anyone that came too close.  Baby Blue was in fear for her life.  Why was mommy holding onto this little box of food with such a grip?  She always shares her food. Always.

Why had it been so long since I've eaten this food?  I mean we only had it about 200 days out of my 260 day pregnancy.

Just the scent alone had drool dripping down my mouth and onto my shirt.  On my shirt? Oh, who cares about that shirt anyway.

As I closed my eyes to savor that first, mouth-watering bite, I was filled with anticipation.  My heart thumped loudly.

My Christopher asked, "So, was it everything you remember?"

Nope.  It was good, but not like I remember.  I was confused.  Devastated. Lost. My heart sank. The drool began to dry up and my composure returned to normal.

I mean, it was good, really good.  But there is a difference between satisfying a hunger and satisfying a craving.  A deep, longing heart-wrenching craving.

The rumble that growled from deep inside my being was quieted, the hunger satiated.  But I had no craving, no deep longing to quiet.

I ate.  It was good.  And I shared.  Baby Blue even ate my very last one.

spa day
What's better in winter than a day at the spa? Yeah, nothing. I know my two year old would have to agree with me, since that what she was enjoying at her daycare.

Nails painted. Pedicure. Pretty makeup. Special hair.

Oh to be a toddler in this decade.  Can I go back?

searching...

Honeymoon:: year 2004
I've been searching, scouring and looking through the numerous photos stored on my external hard drives.  I'm searching for the comical photo pages I have of Baby Blue from last winter and still haven't found it.  For someone who usually thinks of herself as fairly organized, my photos are not.  The upside to spending hours searching for that one long lost photo... finding other gems that have been long forgotten.
Honeymoon:: year 2004
These gems are obviously not from last winter.  I took these in April of 2004 on our honeymoon, with our cheap (well, not quite cheap at the time) little point and shoot.  Way before I was even into photography, had no idea what a blog was and I'd never even heard of iPhoto, Aperture or Photoshop.
Honeymoon:: year 2004
I just had fun capturing the scenes we were enveloped in.
Honeymoon:: year 2004
I loved the scenery, morning, noon and night.
Honeymoon:: year 2004
For anyone living in the deep north... don't these just make you feel a little warmer.

After climbing up her stool to the sink, placing her hands under the running water to wash, it was time for her 'work' to begin.  Beside me at the counter her hands moved from one vegetable to another, as we played a game to name them all.  My work was straightforward, dicing.  Her's, well, her tasks were a little more involved... everything else.  After much effort, tasting along the way, and no catastrophes, we had a delicious winter meal and a very proud little girl.
