And It Was Good

Two plastic jack-o-lanterns, one pink and one orange, sit just inside the front door, with one precious piece plucked ever so purposefully from the top. The top of a stack that lies hovering just beneath the curve of the opening , stocked with pounds of sugar... And pretzels and popcorn.

Halloween

Remnants of Raggedy Ann and Andy lay in strewn heaps across the kids' bedroom floor, thrown to the side as the Sweet Tart sugar rush began to fade into cries of exhaustion. Tired eyes finally gave way to the darker side of eyelids for the night, and excited breathing has now morphed into the relaxing sound of rhythmic slow breaths, in and out.

Tonight was good.

It's like the holidays opening number for the end of the year's grand finale and I can't help but inhale every last bit of it. I woke this morning ready to conquer the world, and my list... Of which sometimes I can't tell the difference, and I don't know if it was the way the rain trickled down from a gray sky, the jam-packed week turned jam-packed weekend (except for pajama Saturday) or the fact that I was still overcoming an under-the-weather bout, but come noon I just wanted to climb under my covers sidled up next to my littles and stay. All night.

Halloween
Halloween

But I didn't. We had a house full of friends coming over, a neighborhood waiting for costumed littles to call out "trick-or-treat," and two little bottles of bound up energy waiting to rag doll their way down the street.

So up I stayed, and the night unfolded like a beautifully written fall story. With palm trees and 75 degree weather... that part I'm still trying to wrap my head around. It sang out in direct contrast to last years layers to keep warm and an evening of numb fingers and noses.

Tonight was good.

We tumbled our way over the smooth pavement of our streets' sidewalks. Literally. Every kid fell at least once. Little brother tried to keep up with big sister, who most of the time stayed twenty steps ahead and then would occasionally wait for her red-haired counterpart to show up, and in-between chasing her footsteps, he'd stop and gaze in awe of the bright crescent moon that lit up an almost cloudless black sky. And trees. And dogs. Basically it looked like we never take this little one out of the house, because everything earned a "Woah!"

Top it off with the big girls carrying buckets full of their own candy, and the little guys working to do the same, with buckets hanging as low as their tired arms would let them, but no help was needed thank-you-very-much... And well, tonight was good.

Halloween

Come tomorrow, when I secretly try and compete with myself to see just how long I can stay in yoga pants, I'll still be excited about the kid's costumes that we actually put together with a couple of trips to Goodwill, bleaching some pink clothes white, raiding through the closet and only one good burn from the hot glue gun while attaching red yarn "hair" to a sailor hat and bonnet.

Once we slid the last of the outfit onto their bodies and finished it off with crimson cheeks, I died.

Hump Day Dump 10/26/11

And came back with another piece of my heart still in their hands.

If that weren't enough, the mailman brought a present full of goodies today... A box full of gorgeous, fiery leaves and some harvest apple scents. And my autumn lovin', sentimental heart leaped.

Come on holidays. Bring it.

Pumpkin Spice Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate:: KitchenWise Episode One!

I'm so excited to introduce you to a new installment here on Fresh Mommy, and that is a new mini webisode called KitchenWise! So, each week we'll be sharing something new, either that we love or something we're trying for the very first time. Some webisodes will feature delicious treat recipes and often times we'll be featuring skin and body care favorites... all made with what you've got in your kitchen.

And for our very first recipe? You must trust me on this... you've got to make this. Tonight, tomorrow and the next day. They are just THAT good, simply decadent and delectable.

Pumpkin Spice Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate

Really, try it. They're so creamy, rich and out of this world. And perfect after a cool walk through the neighborhood with costumed kids collecting loads of candy. This is just my contribution to your sweet tooth today, Happy Halloween!

Plus, you can be like me and get overly excited and slosh a bit out of every cup when you try to pour it. I resorted to a ladle after the first two...

EDIT: This recipe made enough for ten 8oz glasses. Serves five people VERY generously, and easily more, we had half a batch leftover... BREAKFAST!

I'd love it if you gave it a look and let me know what you think, just don't mind my strange faces and if you wait till the end... well, I won't tell you. You just have to watch and see.

And below is the delicious printable recipe if you'd like it. Well the printable part isn't delicious. The recipe is. Never mind. Don't listen to anything I say.

Sunday Citar ~ Home

It's Sunday again that means it's time for one of my favorite things... Sunday Citar!!
Here's where we all share a quote or two... a favorite, a new find, a laugh inducing or tear inducing quote you love this week. (Citar = to quote in Spanish)

“There's nothing half so pleasant as coming home again.”
Margaret Elizabeth Sangster

Saturday morning I woke in my own bed to the playful kisses of two little bodies, their arms and legs pretzeled around me. Though I stayed in bed as long as I could, it wasn't long before the morning was off to a whirring start... beginning with the house alarm being set off accidentally. But soon the whirring shifted gears and coffee was brewed, pancakes and eggs were passed around between laughs and stories told by grandparents.

I was gone for just a few short days, but no matter the amount of time, it's always good to come home. Aliyah accompanied Chris to the airport on Friday to pick me up, and as I came down the escalator looking for the right carousel to deliver my worn, recognizable red and black suitcase I hear a familiar "Mommy!" called out to me from the hall. I turned around before I knew what my body was doing and saw a smiling little face timidly peaking out from a row of connected airport seats. Her small hand was clasped over her mouth, but I could see the curve of her cheeks and squinted eyes... and I smiled right back before I ran to hold her lanky body in my arms.

I had been in the madness of Miami's South Beach, and trying to enjoy the glimpses of palm trees dancing against the cerulean sky as I ate a quick lunch or shifted gears from one meeting to another. It was busy, but the saltwater infused air was still a beautiful place to drown in work and push through feeling a little under-the-weather for responsibilities.

But here? In the arms of this little being that made me a mommy... It was the perfect start of a good weekend.

A weekend where my pajamas never left my body, save the time I put on my swimsuit to join my family in the hot tub for a little warm up after their swim.

A weekend of "punkins" and carving, toasted seeds and slimy fingers.

"punkin" carving

A weekend of decorating the front porch with illuminated creations and webbing after letting my kids play in a bath of suds and sliding fresh pajamas on their oiled bodies.

Have I mentioned I love the scent of our essential oil infused baby oil? I do.

We're now ready for a parade of costumed kids to make their way through the neighborhood, filling their bags, and bellies, with sweets.

Speaking of sweet, I've been working on a fun, new project that debuts tomorrow! Totally sweet, and something I can't wait to share with you all... so come back by and let me know what you think.

And because the sweetest things really do come in the smallest packages, my stay-at-home-enjoying-the-moments-of-in-between day ended with precious kisses from two littles who know how show a mama some love.

I'm home.

Sunday Snapshot

Hump Day Dump:: A Little Lost

I just trekked through the colorful and vibrant shop lined streets of South Beach for the Apple store, twice. I needed to replace my phone, with it's sticky home button and crackled screen, and in doing so, lost the last few photos of my bath bubble clad littles and the gorgeous sky on my descent into Miami today. Why I thought they were backed up? I know not. Just like I'm not sure why I've been calling my family by the wrong names or have looked for my phone this week while talking on it. Maybe the same reason I directed a friend to turn right while saying left. But Hump Day Dump is still live and well... even with the limited selection I have today. What have you been up to this week?

My creation
hump day dump

Welcome to our tradition here on Fresh Mommy Blog... on Wednesdays, when I try to be wordless, I'm just going to dump the previous week's photos from my phone. A little piece of where we've been and what we've been up to. And the resulting collage? Well, I think it speaks so much more than I could. Welcome to Hump Day Dump. Link up with us... whether wordless or word-full, one photo or many, you're all welcome here!

All of my photos were taken on an iPhone with the instagr.am app and were put together using Big Huge Labs mosaic maker... super simple and free.

Searching for Fall

My daughter is at her morning "school" class, my littlest is still bedheaded and pajamad while I feed him oatmeal one-handed and type this... a line I've written and backspaced too many times. I've got about an hour to throw a suitcase together and figure out how to read through the cracked screen of my iPhone before I head off to the airport for Miami. It's a trip for work that usually gets me out of the cold snap that always hits Michigan in the fall. The one that always makes us wonder why it's so cold already, and it's not even winter yet. We bundle in scarves and hats and ride in wagons filled with hay before picking apples to make the perfect spiced apple pie. But this time, I'm not in Michigan, and the cold snap that's hit us still lets me wear flip flops and not regret it.

Now that I live in Florida, just a quick little plane away from Miami, we've been searching for Fall.  So before I run off without any clothes packed, I'll just leave you with a few little things that have brought fall closer to home.

1) The Neighborhood Boo

And the way my girl squealed with delight when we left the house and started our journey down the sidewalk to homes that we knew housed kids.  And the way we'd ring the doorbell and high-tail it out of there, only to turn around and find my girl hiding behind a tree in wait because she "wanted to hear them when they found their present." And every time they did, she'd wait till they went back inside and then run to me exclaiming, "This is SO much fun!" or "There was a little boy in there, I saw him, he'll love it!"

2) Finding bits of fall on the trail behind our house.

... 3) And filling our basket with big crunchy leaves and pine cones for a craft project later.

4) Fall festivals that give us pony rides!

... there will be more on that festival later, for now, I have to pack.

What is it that you're enjoying lately? I'd LOVE to hear.
